Carry On Luggage Rules & Tips

With the changing face of travel, it is often hard to find the right carry on luggage. It seems like the airlines are always changing their minds, making it difficult for us travelers. With so many options from various luggage companies, it’s really up to the consumer to figure out which piece of carry on truly fits. There are so many things to consider when choosing a carry on so here’s a quick list.

Carry On Size & Weight Are Key
Check the website of the airline you are flying for the most up to date rules, dimensions, weights and info. Don’t rely on an outdated sheet from a store or travel agent. If flying on a foreign carrier, there will be some differences in both weight and size compared to US based airlines. Checking the website will ensure you are within the limits. If you are flying internationally, especially with a connecting flight, always double check both the weight and dimension restrictions. Even if you are flying direct on an international flight, your wheeled carry on is subject to weight limitations and can be weighed by the gate agent. This happens frequently, especially on foreign carriers, so be sure not to be overweight. Always start with the most light weight carry on you can find. Don’t forget to use your portable luggage scale at home to double check. Remember, in addition to your wheeled carry on, in most cases, you are allowed a soft sided “personal item”. It should fit under your seat and sizes do vary. A smart personal item should have a sleeve that allows you to slide it over the handle of your carry-on.
