Is it Safe to Travel to Turkey?

Turkey is one of the few countries accepting Americans during COVID-19. But does that mean you should travel there? The first thing I do now when considering an international destination is to check the CDC and WHO websites to investigate their COVID statistics. Comparing the infection and death rates of Turkey to my own county (Los Angeles) gave me peace of mind. I knew that with the proper planning and research, it was possible to have safe travel in Turkey during COVID-19.

I quickly researched flights on Skyscanner and discovered that flights to Turkey were cheap for summer on Qatar and Turkish Air. So cheap, it wasn’t even worth it to use points but instead buy the tickets outright. I chose to fly Qatar Airways because they were 40% cheaper on this flight compared to their competitors. Also, their safety standards of cleanliness and enhanced passenger protocols gave me peace of mind and confidence. Double checking seating charts is now an essential travel hack. I check for occupancy and if the middle seats are being blocked . My flight to Turkey was about 40% full.

Entry Requirements into Turkey During COVID-19

  • Travelers are not required to present proof of a negative COVID-19 test.
  • Those showing signs of COVID will have a PCR test administered upon arrival.
  • No quarantine is required unless testing positive for COVID.
  • It will be mandatory for those testing positive to quarantine at their own cost.
  • All travelers still need to follow regular visa requirements.

The Visa process is unchanged

E-Visa is still available to US citizens. If you choose this easy online option, be sure that entry and exit dates are firm. Otherwise, you will have to purchase another visa with cash upon arrival.

As with my previous trips, I voluntarily tested 48 hrs before my trip. After speaking with my Doctor and receiving negative test results, I felt good about boarding my plane to Turkey. There are temperature and thermal scans in both Istanbul and Izmir airports to ensure passengers traveling were not displaying COVID symptoms.

Easy to Social Distance

Now, whenever I’m planning a trip, I look for activities or sites that are outdoors. I like to not spend too much time in big cities, but rather experience the outdoors or small villages and social distance. Turkey has a good combination of both sightseeing and activities that are located outdoors. This is one of the keys to success for safe travel in Turkey during COVID-19. Between the Aegean, Mediterranean and the Black Sea, there are over 5000 miles (8000 km) of coastline to explore. Some of the best beaches in the whole region are located on the Turkish coast. The Unesco World Heritage Sites of Ephesus, Pergamon, Xanthos, Hieropolis and so many more are mostly outdoors. With limited crowds during this time, visitors can wander ancient ruins very comfortably and social distance. Natural wonders like Cappadocia, Pamukkale or Sakilikent National Park are an outdoor lovers dream come true.

Staying Safe in Turkey During COVID-19 means getting outdoors
There are plenty of choices in Turkey for those who love the outdoors. This is Sakilikent National Park which has one of the largest canyons in this part of the world.

Safety Measures Within Turkey During COVID-19

In the big cities of Istanbul and Izmir, temp checks, hand sanitizer and masks are the requirement to enter most buildings. Whether entering a bazaar or a rooftop bar, the procedures are pretty consistent. Even in smaller coastal towns, mask wearing and proper hand sanitation is given importance and due diligence. Social distancing signs are posted on every public beach. Beach beds are spaced out. I also noticed some beaches spray sanitizer on beds in between use. Both beaches and beach clubs were sparsely occupied, so overcrowding was never an issue.

The Consistent Safety Protocols and Message

Are you going to see everyone wearing a mask all of the time? No. In big cities most people wear masks in public as required. In smaller towns and villages, most locals will wear a mask when they interact with you if you are inside. Due to the low infection rates in Turkey, and the common response to the rules, I feel that it is safe to travel to Turkey during COVID-19. What I did notice is the lack of fear, lack of paranoia and the common effort to take proper precautions. There are signs everywhere about social distancing and best practices. Hand sanitizer stations are prevalent everywhere. From social distancing at the airport carousel to the hand sanitizer pump outside of my airbnb on a small coastal town, the efforts and procedures are noticeable.

Stay Safe Tourism Certificate

Turkey Tourism has its own certification program for hotels, restaurants and transportation which puts in place measures of safety. The certification is meant to promote the health and well being of travelers in touristic places. The hotels that I chose all met the guidelines and standards of certification for cleanliness and social distancing. The protocols cover everything from guest check in, rooms, facilities and food service. Inspections are conducted regularly so it is important for properties to keep up their standards. The Safe Tourism Certificate was prominently displayed by properties that adhered to the guidelines and recommended safety procedures

Safe Travel in Turkey During COVID-19

Public transportation is operating in Turkey. Everything from minibuses that cross regions to buses and trams are fully functioning. To stay safe in Turkey during COVID, I avoided public transport all together. It was easy for me to limit my exposure by hiring taxis in big cities and then renting a car for two weeks for a roadtrip. Most taxi drivers wear a mask or quickly put it on as soon as you step in the cab. My car hire company also guaranteed enhanced cleaning of vehicles. Since driving in Turkey is easy with good roads and cheap tolls, hiring my own car became the obvious choice. It’s also the best way to explore Turkey.

Road tripping in Turkey is the ideal way to social distance during COVID-19
Hiring a car and road tripping is a great way to social distance in Turkey. So much to see and so many sunsets to chase!

Al fresco dining is common place. Most restaurants, especially during the warmer months, will have outside seating or fans. In most beach clubs, beaches, cafe’s and restaurants, waiters and staff are wearing mask. In smaller towns and local beaches or eateries, there may be a relaxation of the rules, but everyone seems to be doing their best to abide by them and respect public health.

COVID Safety Precautions with Turkish Flair

The relaxed attitude that is pervasive within every day life in Turkey extends to Coronavirus, because most Turkish people are doing their part to fight it. Especially due to their association with the European Union, Turkey has safety measures in place to protect its citizens and visitors. The country’s approach lacks drama or any kind of heightened sense of emotion. Due to their low infection rate (compared to other nations), everyday life seems to carry on. The gregarious charm of the Turkish people is still strong. The Turkish people seem to be following anti-COVID measures laid out by their government for the common good allowing them to enjoy their laid back approach to life.

What is Open in Turkey During Coronavirus?

Most tourist sites throughout Turkey are open but there is plenty of renovation happening during this time. The most notable closure is the Galata Tower in Istanbul. Turkey is taking advantage of the downturn in tourism to renovate important sites. The big difference is most tourist sites are operating under pandemic operating hours. They might open later or close early. Google tends to be the most reliable source of up-to-date information. For example, Ephesus opened at 10am instead of 8am.

The Library at Ephesus is one of the many Unesco World Heritage sites that attracts visitors to Turkey from around the globe.

Was it worth it?

For me, it was absolutely worth it to travel to Turkey during COVID. This trip lifted my sprits, reconnected me with my passions, and had a positive impact on my mental health. As a tourism destination, there is no doubt Turkey is amazing. The culture, natural diversity, history and food make Turkey a fascinating country for any traveler. The mix of golden Mediterranean sunsets, ancient sites, dramatic landscapes, exquisite meals, small Aegean villages and phenomenal beaches made it all worth it for me. I would agree that safe travel to Turkey during COVID-19 is possible.

If you are ill or are exhibiting COVID symptoms, do not fly. As a healthy young person, I chose to fly internationally during COVID because for me, the reward is far greater than the risk.

Mexico is one of the few countries accepting American Travelers during COVID-19

I decided to travel as an American to Mexico during COVID-19. I’m grateful they let me into the county and I would not have blamed them if they didn’t. The surge in COVID-19 cases and deaths was becoming alarming. Since air travel had declined so much, the tickets were extraordinarily cheap. I purchased a $240 RT ticket from LAX in mid June for travel in July. I tested negative days before the trip and off I went not to escape the pandemic, but to take a much needed mental health break. I was desperate to travel again, explore the world, curiously learn from other cultures and just gain international perspective on the current world situation.

There are various direct flights to Mexico from LAX, which minimized time spent on the airplane. The COVID cases in Mexico are about the same as my home state of California. The big difference was that the areas of Jalisco, Nayarit and Quintana Roo were not hotspots of Coronavirus. Like all travelers, I weighed the risk vs reward and felt like the areas I wanted to visit were low risk options.

Confirmed cases of Coronavirus in Mexico gave me confidence to travel to Mexico during COVID-19

Requirements for Americans Traveling to Mexico During COVID-19

Mexico is accepting travelers from the USA via air travel. No quarantine is required. A health declaration must be completed before arrival. I completed my health declaration online at LAX before my flight and showed a QR code upon arrival. You will be met with a temp check before passport control. After passport control, another immigration officer asked me basic questions and then I was welcomed into Mexico.

Easy to Social Distance

It's easy to social distance while travel to Mexico during COVID-19
Yelapa is an ideal day trip from Puerto Vallarta. Just $18 roundtrip by water taxi. I found empty beaches, willing beach front restaurants and adventure at a nearby waterfall.

Both Puerta Vallarta and Quintana Roo are usually filled to the brim with tourists and the area can be overcrowded during the summer months. I found empty beaches, vacant waterfalls and quiet tourist hubs. The few fellow travelers around were Mexicans coming in from the big cities. While the Cancun airport and surroundings in Quintana Roo were a bit busier, it was as if the tourist season had not yet begun.

Ziggy's Beach Club is a fun place to social distance during Coronavirus
The hipster enclave of Tulum is pretty quiet these days. You can enjoy a beach club or the various art throughout the city.

Beach clubs in Tulum spread out there beds for guests to enjoy the white sand beaches and clear blue waters. In Yelapa and Sayulita, fantastic day trips from Puerto Vallarta, I found peace. Cafe’s and restaurants were very sparsely occupied and the cobbled streets of Sayulita were surprisingly quiet. Booking a boat in Bacalar for the day was met with gratitude from the boat captain. Whether it was the jungle, beach, restaurant, or hotel pool, social distancing was pretty easy due to the lack of crowds and efforts in protocol. If rest, wellness and relaxation is what you are looking for, the you can have plenty of that in as you travel to Mexico during COVID-19. And the food is just as good during this time too!

Quiet town of Sayulita during recent travel to Mexico during COVID-19
Sayulita is another great day trip from Puerto Vallarta. It cost $25 via Uber for the hour drive. I found a sleepy surfer town that has become an enclave for wellness travel.

It’s hard to describe how the combination of the lack of crowds, and Mexican efforts to maintain safety standards, helped to create this once in a lifetime dream travel scenario. The surfer town of Sayulita was starting to become overrun by the wellness travel industry. Now it’s returned to it’s cobblestone charm and sleepy nature. In beautiful locations and tourist centers like Tulum & Puerto Vallarta, my photos don’t have anyone in them, not because I’m trying to hide people, but because there was hardly anyone around. Hotels in Quintan Roo by law were only at 30% capacity.

Travel in Mexico During COVID

I was lucky to fly domestically within Mexico because it showed me the huge contrast to flying a US based airline. The protocols in place for air travel reflected what was happening on the ground. Air travel within Mexico during Coranavirus involved common sense boarding and deplaning process, temp checks, sanitizing carry ons, and hand sanitizer upon boarding. These new rules for traveling during Coronavirus actually made me feel at ease and comfortable with the risk of flying. For more on my flying experience, check out my article on Flying During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Flying in Mexico during COVID-19 Pandemic
The contrast between US based airlines and Aeromexico could not be more obvious. Aeromexico is doing everything possible to keep passengers safe and healthy during COVID since it’s virtually impossible to social distance on a plane.

Masks were required at all times everywhere I went. The Mexican people wore them everywhere too. Cobrebocas or Masks were not required on the beach as there was hardly anyone around. The basic rules involved temp checks, wearing a mask and hand sanitizer. This was commonplace protocol when entering any building, restaurant, hotel, beach club or anytime remotely inside.

Mask were required everywhere in Mexico
Signs reinforced mask requirement in my favorite taco shop, El Fogon, in Playa Del Carmen, Quintana Roo

What is Open in Mexico During COVID-19?

Most tourist sites are closed, including the Pyramids and archaeological sites in Quintana Roo. Some cenotes were also closed and swimming is no longer allowed in them. In Puerto Vallarta, most restaurants and bars are completely shut by 10pm and QR codes instead of menus are standard. The same thing goes for downtown Tulum. Hotels in the zona hotelera (hotel zone by the beach), are open a little later and have an underground or speak easy vibe that can become crowded by expats. Normally raucous Playa Del Carmen had some restaurants open until midnight.

Bacalar is a great place to social distance during Coronavirus
Renting a boat the same day in Bacalar was no problem. Spending the afternoon on the magical waters that is actually a lake was a great way to social distance. The 2hr drive from Tulum was well worth it. The multitude of stars that light up the sky on the drive home completed the spiritual and mystical energy of this area.

With the lack of tourism and significant loss of tourist revenue, everyone in Mexico is suffering. The beach bar guys, bracelet lady on the beach, the paddle board guy, water taxi captain, waiters, uber drivers – all are suffering by the loss of income. I felt good about being there, showing a little bit of support and helping the local economy by purchasing local goods and eating at family run places. No matter what was happening in the rest of the world, the al pastor tacos, fresh ceviche and tequila were still outstanding. Even with the obvious challenges, the warmth and generosity of the Mexican people is still strongly present. I was welcomed and treated graciously everywhere. The Mexican spirit and emotional climate is still one of sincere joy.

ATV fun in Yelapa during travel to Mexico during COVID-19
I hired Claris in Yelapa to drive me in an ATV through Yelapa to get to a waterfall.

Was it Worth It?

Travel to Mexico during COVID-19 was not complicated, just different and atypical. If given the option to do it again, I would do it gladly. I would even extend my trip as Coronavirus cases are still continuing to surge in California. In Mexico, I was free. The freedom to travel during this unprecedented time was liberating, rejuvenating and eye opening. In a way it was a travel milestone for me. It became my first trip in the COVID era. While I had plenty of time to relax and reflect, I realized that travel would never ever be the same again. With that, the challenge of how to explore this new world we live in, is well worth it.

As an avid explorer of foreign destinations and cultures, I have to remind myself to discover the remarkable places close to home. I recently traveled to Mendocino California. I have been kicking myself ever since because I wish I would have visited much earlier. Mendocino is one of the hidden gems in California and the type of low key travel experience that is a nice change of pace for me. It is a fantastic experience for anyone looking to explore the California Coast and escape crowds.

How to Get to Mendocino, California

Flying

You can fly into SFO or OAK if you plan on spending time in San Francisco or the Bay Area. My suggestions is to fly into  Sonoma County Airport (STS) in Santa Rosa. This gets you much closer to Mendocino and in the heart of the Wine Country.

Renting  Car

Hiring a car is honestly essential to explore Mendocino. Part of the experience is taking the time to wander, drive along the coast and stop along the way. Getting from STS, SFO or OAK is easiest done with your own car.

What to do in Mendocino County

Go Wine Tasting

I know Sonoma and Napa get the big wine tasting accolades. But, there is excellent wine all over California and especially in Mendocino. I recommend that you wine taste and pick up some wine from the airport to have in your hotel. I stopped at Maple Creek Winery – ArteVino in the Anderson Valley off of Hwy 128. Be sure to stop by this hidden this hidden gem and say hello to the owner Tom for me.

Take a drive along the California Coast

Taking a drive along the dramatic California Coast

This part of the California Coast puts on a show for any visitor. Mendocino California is dramatic with lots of secret coves and beaches. There are plenty of places to admire the high cliffs and stunning scenery. The combination of the rough ocean waves and surrounding greenery often reminds me of Ireland or Southern England. The weather in Mendocino is different depending on the time of year. It can be foggy, sunny, or even rainy depending on the time of year.

Take a ride on the Skunk Train

The classic Skunk Train is a hidden gem

For families, kids at heart or anyone who loves trains, do not miss taking a ride on the skunk train. It’s a nice gentle ride thru the redwoods right along the Noyo River that makes California history come to life. There’s some fun entertainment. The train takes off from Fort Bragg and slowly chugs it’s way thru majestic California scenery for an hour. Don’t forget to visit the free train museum before or after your ride. I recommend booking tickets in advance.

California is an embarrassment of riches. The best National Parks, an epic coast line, amazing world class wine, various cultures and of course the entertainment industry. A Hidden Gem in the Caribbean

The Sandbar at Cayos Cochinos Honduras

It’s not often when the warm ocean breeze and crystal clear blue waters of the Caribbean call your name. I recently discovered a group of small secret islands off the Honduras coast. Cayos Cochinos are 13 tiny sandy islands that seem to float peacefully in the Caribbean.  The Cayos are located 30 km from La Ceiba and on the north coast of Honduras, and 45 km from Roatán. They can easily be visited as a day trip La Ceiba or even Tela. In Cayo Menor there is a a visitor center, which provides information on the rules of use and behavior of the Marine Natural Monument. Various laws protect these waters and prohibit all types of commercial fishing, nets and traps within the marine park.

These islands are famous for their sandy beaches, sea turtles, coral reefs, snorkeling, abundant fishing and Garufina culture. The lack of big resorts, overtourism and environmentally damaging habits, is a refreshing change of pace for this part of the Caribbean.

Cayo Major Honduras

Getting To Cayos Cochinos

Getting to Cayos Cochinos is relatively easy. Travel to the community of Sambo Creek, located about 12 miles east of La Ceiba, on the way to Trujillo. From there, you can take a boat that will take about 45 minutes to travel across the channel to this lovely and quite pristine set of islands with some of the best preserved reefs in the planet! Keep in mind that the ocean gets rougher as the day progresses. Because of this, boats depart as early as possible, and plan their return to the mainland between two and three in the afternoon. Tourist Options a local tour operator based in La Ceiba offers daily tours departing from Sambo Creek at 8:00 a.m. They also offer pick up service from your hotel in La Ceiba.

Seeing the Islands

Most of the small islands are private. However three of them belong to Garifuna communities. They are fishing outposts for different Garifuna Communities from the mainland. Of these, the best one is Cayo Chachauate. There are plenty of locals to talk to and if you are lucky, they may even let you try some of the local homemade spirits. Eating on Cayo Chachahuate

The snorkeling is top notch since the islands are a Marine Protected Area and are managed by the Honduran Coral Reef Foundation. The coral reef here is part of the world’s second largest coral reef system known as the Meso-American Barrier Reef.

Walking on Cayo Chachahuate Honduras

Cayo Chachahuate is like a time machine to when the Garifuna people had just arrived in Honduras. The community of several hundred people still lives on the beaches and builds their homes out of wood and thatched palms. Many of them have stopped fishing for income and have turned to tourism. The town is picturesque, the locals are chill and the food is tasty. It’s a laid back Carribbean scene that is beautiful in it’s simplicity. I now understand why the Cayos Cochinos Marine Monument is the most visited national park in La Ceiba

I’ve lived in Los Angeles my whole life and it truly excites me when I discover a new gem to brag about. I recently had the opportunity to have a staycation at the Terranea Resort located in Rancho Palos Verdes. This destination resort is easily accessible from either LAX, Downtown LA or anywhere in Los Angeles. Dramatically perched on an unspoiled part of the California Coast, it is easily one of L.A.’s best ocean front hotels. The sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and the unique environment of the Palos Verdes Peninsula make this destination property a natural haven for lovers of the outdoors and destination resorts.

Just one of the pools on the lush grounds of Terranea

Villas & Bungalows are also available at the Terranea Resort

As beautiful as the resort and surroundings are, Terranea is guided by the philosophy of ecological sustainability. They are dedicated to having a minimal impact and making every effort to protect and steward the native environment and Pacific Ocean. The level of sustainability is almost reverential and makes any guest feel good about their contribution to green measures. From composting, eliminating plastic straws, the chef’s garden, and natural irrigation to food recycling (they even donate partially consumed food) and donating wholly usable toiletries left in guest rooms to the Midnight Mission in downtown Los Angeles, this hotel makes a difference in its community and an effort to improve its world.

The bright and comfy rooms at Terranea

The rooms at Terranea are comfortable, spacious, bright and fitted with every deluxe amenity

Chefs to End Hunger is one of the many initiatives by Terranea to have a positive impact on their local community and minimize their waste

Breakfast at Terranea does not disappoint

The gorgeous and delicious food served at the various restaurants on property is another reflection of Terranea’s attention to beauty and detail

There are also plenty of opportunities for natural encounters for visitors to the hotel. More than 14 acres of wildlife habitat surrounding the resort make it easy to observe the local fauna at Terranea. For wildlife lovers, I would recommend the Naturalist-led tours that guide visitors along the resort’s extensive walking, hiking, and bird watching footpaths along the scenic Discovery Trail, part of the Palos Verdes Peninsula trail system. The tours help further awareness of the land’s ecology, educating guests on the resort’s coastal flora and fauna, such as the California crabapple, a rare species that grows only on the Peninsula and Catalina Island. California Blue and Pacific Gray whales migrate through the waters just 50 yards offshore, within view of Terranea nearly year-round. I saw some just off the coast before heading out for my kayak tour. I spent one morning Kayaking through the clean, protected waters. I’ve been Kayaking all over the world, and not only was this a beautiful experience on the California Coast, but the property specifically encouraged us to pick up any ocean rubbish. Before we knew it, the kayaking tour became a mission for ocean clean up!

Terranea also has a phenomenal spa for deluxe pampering. Two types of steam rooms!

The Spa Pool at Terranea is available only to spa guests.

You can donate to a variety of charities or choose a local partner. One such partner is the Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles, which is the only rehabilitation hospital in Los Angeles for seals and sea lions stranded on beaches from Malibu to Seal Beach due to illness, injury or malnutrition. A $10 donation through the Kind Traveler platform could feed a seal/sea-lion breakfast, lunch & dinner for a day.  Why not make a difference on your next vacation?

Marine Mammal Care Center

Just a short drive away, the Marine Mamal Care Center, is one of the local non-profit partners for Tarranea. The primary mission of the center is to treat protected mammals and provide public education. The center has a variety of different seals and sea lions as patients that need a variety of care and rehabilitation before being released back into the ocean. My visit taught me not only about the incredible expense just to feed the patients but also about the differences between seals and sea lions.

When traveling to Los Angeles beaches: 1.) If you see a marine mammal in need of help call 1 (800) 39-WHALE 2.) If you find waste on the beach please be an ocean steward and pick it up.

Most people fly into Dublin when traveling to Ireland. Say what you want, but I think Dublin is great first bite of big city Irish life and culture. No visit to Dublin is complete without experiencing a classic Irish pub. It’s a great place to meet locals, grab a pint of Guiness and get some food. The Pubs of Dublin are perfect for practicing the art of conversation and prepping to explore the rest of Ireland. While I don’t advocate spending all of your time in Dublin, you have to make the most of it! I’ve been lucky enough to visit these pubs my whole adult life. They are my favorite for a variety of reasons and have some of the best memories spending many hours drinking, laughing and enjoying life in these pubs. This curated list of pubs are located in the  walkable heart of Dublin. I suggest you bookmark them in your favorite mapping app and enjoy an evening in Dublin.

O’Neills

2 Suffolk Street, Dublin 2, D02KX03, Ireland

In Dublin, this is my home away from home. They have an amazing carvery for dinner and I like to head here on my 1st night in Dublin. It’s also my favorite place for St Patrick’s Day in Dublin. There is plenty of seating in this cramped labyrinth style pub that has been in existence for 300 years. They often have music and dancing upstairs. No matter how lively it gets, there is always a little corner you can tuck into after you’ve been poured a pint from one of the many bars.

The Duke

9 Duke St, Dublin 2, D02 NR76, Ireland

For me, this place has the best Guinness stew in Dublin.  As a student traveler, I would often come here for their cheap and tasty food menu, but have since fallen in love with the simplicity of this place. They also pour a smooth pint. They are located just of the main shopping drag, Grafton St. Even though it’s a Regency Era pub, most people know it as the start of the Dublin Literary Pub Crawl. Avoid this place around the starting time of the pub crawl so you don’t have to deal with a bunch of lost Americans wandering around.

Davy Byrnes

21 Duke St, Dublin, Ireland

This is one of the most visited pubs in Dublin by history nerds like me and James Joyce fans. If you want to be part of literary and Dublin history, have a pint here. It’s located across the street from The Duke.

Kehoe’s

9 South Anne Street, Dublin 2, Ireland

Kehoe’s is pretty unpretentious, and even thought it’s close to Grafton Street, has more of a local crowd. It’s possibly because Kehoe’s pours one of the best pints in Dublin. This place oozes character with it’s dark mahogany, alcoves and snugs, for enjoying the pint of the black stuff or having an intimate conversation. I’ve never regretted having a pint at Kehoe’s and somehow feel a little bit more like a local once inside.

Oliver St John Gogarty

18-21 Anglesea St, Temple Bar, Dublin 2, Ireland

Located in the heart of Temple Bar, this raucous pub is not for quiet intimate conversations or those who have sensitive ears. Oliver St John Gogarty also offers rooms and accommodations, making it convenient for those who want to party in the lively Temple Bar quarter. Believe me, it always seems to be St Patrick’s Day in this Pub. Music is played nightly.

AngelBrandedBannerThis Sunday lunch was at one of the best pubs in London

Editors Note: Updated October 2018

Everyone who’s been to the Royal Capital has an opinion on the Best Pubs in London. One of things I miss the most when I’m away from London (or the UK) is a properly poured pint. There are few more quintessentially British experiences than sitting in a historic pub and having great conversation while sipping a superb pint of hand pulled ale. Pubs in London, and all over the UK, offer travelers a chance to slow down and get a glimpse into the social center of British culture.

Over the last decade, the farm-to-table movement and gastropubs have revolutionized British gastronomy and pubs all over the UK. London is full of excellent pubs, but these are the ones that I like due to their beer selection, ambiance, location and great food. Centrally located, you can easily stumble between these pubs like a pin ball while walking, taking the bus or tube. None of these pubs are part of a chain or bigger corporation. Stay away from those as they will only offer you high prices, boring food and bad service.

If you are headed to London, don’t miss these historic pubs that serve great beer and excellent food in a traditional ambiance. Below is my list of the best pubs in London.

The Best Pubs in London

Pub #1 Ye Old Cheshire Cheese

145 Fleet Street
London EC4A 2BU

Super historic and a must stop on any Fleet St tour or pub crawl. Rebuilt shortly after the great fire of 1666. It’s a labyrinth and cavernous inside with lots of different nooks and cranny’s. The food can be hit or miss but the atmosphere is well worth it. They serve the Sam Smith brand of beers.

Ye olde cheshire cheese has been one of the best pubs in London for centuries

Pub #2 Lamb & Flag

Rose Street
London WC2E 9EB
United Kingdom

Lamb & Flag Website

Right around the corner from Covent Garden and Leicester Square, it’s just enough off the tourist track for a local experience. Great for a pint before catching a show on the West End. They serve the Fuller’s Brand of Beers and seasonal proper British ales. The food is traditional british pub food. Charles Dickens drank here. If you want to be transported to Victorian England, drink here.

Pub #3 Red Lion

2 Duke of York Street
London SW1Y 6JP

The Red Lion is kind of hard to find but this is my go to place if I’m anywhere around St. James/Picaddilly/Mayfair area. Located behind Wren’s St. James Church in Picadilly, this spot is small and cozy. Usually best to grab a pint and drink outside. They serve the Fuller’s Brand of Beers. Free Wifi. Traditional British Pub food. Wooden interior and etched glass.

One of the best pubs in London is the Red Lion in St James

Pub #4 Golden Lion

25 King Street
London SW1Y 6QY

Not too far from the Red Lion. It always seems like I’m the only foreigner in this place. If you want a place to eat, best to head upstairs. There is a hunting theme downstairs and more of a theatrical theme upstairs. The Golden Lion serves one of the best burgers I’ve ever had in the UK. Stained glass windows and friendly staff.

Pub #5 Churchill Arms

119 Kensington Church Street
London W8 7LN

This is my South Kensington gem. Gorgeous foliage decorates the outside. It usually makes the best pubs in London list due to the colorful flowers that decorate the exterior. True to its name, this pub is overflowing with memorabilia honoring the greatest Briton, Winston Churchill. The Churchill Arms serves decent Thai food at a great price instead of traditional pub fare. Plenty of great beers and ales on tap.

One of the best pubs in London is the Churchill Arms

There are many more to choose from and many more pints to be had. All of the above are centrally located and great for travelers visiting central London.

Pub #6 Windsor Castle

14 Campden Hill Rd, Kensington,

London W8 7AR, UK

Windsor Castle Pub Website

Awesome low key pub that also serves an amazing pint in a Victorian setting. They have an outside patio so if you visit in the summer be sure to head to the back. I try not to miss Sunday lunch here. I hesitated putting this on my best pubs in London list because it’s off the beaten path and very local.

Italian WaiterThere’s no doubt that travelers, especially Americans, have a strong love affair with Italy. It seems most travelers I meet are going to Italy and it continues to be Europe’s top travel destination each year. A huge part of traveling to Italy, involves enjoying all of the great dishes, recipes and food that Italians actually eat. Eating in Italy has always been pure joy for me. I believe it is one of the best ways to get better acquainted with Italian culture. Italians, as with everything else, are very passionate about what they eat, where they eat and how they eat it. The joy of eating in Italy first begins with a couple of explanations. Understanding the basics on the various types of places to eat, how to order and pitfalls to avoid, will help any traveler have a more enjoyable time eating in Italy.

Where to Eat & Types of Places to Eat

  • Bar: Serves drinks of all sorts, especially coffee. Also, serves some snacks and sandwiches. A bar in the USA and a “Bar” in Italy are very different.
  • Gastronomia: Like a bar but with more sandwich, snack or food options.
  • Café: Like a bar but with a lot more places to sit both inside and outside.
  • Tavola Calda: A very casual place with already prepared food. Great for the busy traveler.
  • Osteria: A casual, inexpensive eatery serving simple rustic traditional food.
  • Trattoria: A bit up the latter from an Osteria. Very casual, inexpensive, small, family owned place to eat with a limited menu of fresh seasonal food. Nowadays, in big cities and in touristy places, they do vary in sizes and price range.
  • Ristorante: A restaurant with a full menu. Usually, the priciest option.

A classic Osteria. Como, Italy

The Food
The masterful art of Italian cuisine boils down to two basic concepts: finding the freshest ingredients and simple cooking. All Italian cooks and chefs remember their first lesson from their mother or grandmother: do not get in the way of the ingredient but enhance the flavor. First, there is really no such thing as “Italian” cooking as we think of it internationally. Yes, most Italians know what a lasagna and pizza are but they will look and taste dramatically different. In Italy, there is an overwhelming spirit of campanilismo (local patriotism). This stems from the pride each Italian has over the village or region they come from. There is a special place in the heart for such regional cuisine especially since it has been passed down for generations. This is incredibly important to understanding the seasonality, freshness and unique nature of the cuisine throughout Italy.

Portions will be much smaller compared to American portions. Also, some main dishes are served on their own. Don’t expect a protein, starch and veggie on every plate. There is a slight possibility a main may have something next to it. If it does there will be very little. Vegetables are meant to be ordered separately. Pastas will not be drowning in sauce or in layers of cheese. Also, pasta portions are small because they are intended to be a first course. In a pasta dish, the main event is the noodle or the key ingredient on the pasta (i.e truffles, caccio e peppe, artichoke, etc)

Antipasto in Bergamo

Eat Like a Local
Remember, to pay local prices, take your coffee standing up at the counter or “banco”. Prices will be posted for both “banco” and “tavola” (counter vs table). Prices double or triple once you sit down outside. If you have time to enjoy the view and relax, why not? You’re in Italy!

Also, take advantage of times like aperitivo aka Italian Happy Hour. Pop into the local Bar or Cafe for a pre-dinner drink and you will have a variety of different snacks and small dishes of great food all included in the price of your drink.

Passeggiata is the time honored tradition of strolling down to the piazza with your loved one or friend. This is best with your favorite flavor of gelato firmly in hand. Take advantage of this time, on every night. It’s a great opportunity to make friends or people watch.

Pasta with clams and seafood.

Pasta with clams and seafood.

Tourist Traps and What to Avoid in Italy
Stay away from the places with the bright “We speak English” signs. Or places with plastic menus in seven different languages. I know that sounds counter intuitive, but avoid places like this. They cater to hordes of tourists and are mostly interested in a business transaction. It is unlikely you will be served local and fresh cuisine in an establishment like this, let alone treated with respect.

An Italian waiter will never bring you the bill (check) unless you ask for it. Italian meals are meant to be enjoyed and savored over time. There is no rush! The table is yours so stay as long as you like.

Never order anything without knowing the price and always double check the prices listed on your check.

Don’t forget you will be charged for pane e coperto. This is the €1-€2 per person charge for bread and a sort of cover charge. It should also appear on the menu. This is customary especially in restaurants or busy touristy areas.

A servizio charge may appear on your check. If it does, take note that is also has to appear on the menu. If not, politely ask for it to be removed. This is a % gratuity added to the bill. This often happens in touristy places in big cities. It’s another way of getting more money from unsuspecting tourists. Tipping in general is very optional and not required. Italian waiters, due to strong labor laws, make more money than your average waiter in the US. If you are delighted with the service, round up your bill, if anything. My Italian friends do not tip.

Restaurants in touristy areas can be expensive. You are mostly paying for the view.

Paris Marais RestaurantI traveled to Paris once with people who were baffled and confused every time we sat down for a meal. This made the rest of us uneasy and eating out in Paris became a tedious tiresome chore instead of a world class culinary experience. With a little effort, eating in Paris can be a fun and pleasurable experience. It’s just a matter of getting over the cultural barrier. Here are some tips on etiquette that will help you enjoy eating & drinking in Paris while on your way to becoming a temporary local.

An Etiquette Guide to Eating in Paris:

  • Greet your waiter. Say “Bonjour” “Bonsoir” or something. Otherwise you will immediately start off on the wrong foot. Not greeting your waiter is considered rude.
  • Even if you don’t speak French, try your best at “Do you speak English?” “Please” “Thank you”. It will go a long way and open up communication between you and your waiter.
  • If you order water, your waiter will ask if you prefer flat or sparkling. Don’t be baffled or confused by this. Just simply pick one. If you don’t want bottled water, it’s okay to order tap water.
  • Don’t order French Onion soup in warm weather. Also, don’t share dishes like French Onion soup. They are usually meant for just one person and is interpreted as cheap and rude by the restaurant staff.
  • Judging French food in a French restaurant in Paris, is not the best idea. For example, don’t be that person who is grossed out by the steak tartare or escargot next to you. You’ll just come off as an ignorant foreigner with no taste.
  • Don’t ask to change the menu or recipe. This confuses the waiter and insults the chef. Avoid making overly demanding requests from your waiter.
  • Remember the table is yours so enjoy your meal. They will not bring the check until you ask for it. This is part of French hospitality. Bringing the check before you ask for it would be like suddenly asking a guest to leave. Meals are long affairs in Paris so no need to rush.
  • Pay attention to the volume level around you. Avoid being loud foreigners while others around you speak in hushed tones.
  • If you are paying with a credit card without a chip (chip and pin card), kindly ask your waiter if they can swipe your card with the magnetic strip.
  • Parisians eat dinner late. The locals will fill a place around 8 or 9 pm.
  • If it’s a popular spot or you have your heart set on a location, book a table ahead.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask the waiter what he recommends.
