Peace of Mind in Paradise with Allianz

An epic sunset in Maui, Hawaii

Like most hard working young professionals, my wife has limited vacation time. So, we decided to spend a couple of days in Maui to celebrate our anniversary this Spring. Since we are based in Los Angeles, the Hawaiian Islands are just a quick five-hour direct flight and are a perfect place to spend some time together in paradise. Maui has a variety of picturesque beaches, amazing resorts, stunning sunsets, fruity drinks and a variety of activities to choose from.

After booking our trip, I insisted on Allianz Travel Insurance even though this trip to Maui was just five days. As a professional traveler, I’ve learned that no matter how much I plan or romanticize travel, things happen and travel is not perfect. For me, I usually have a lot of time, money and my livelihood depending on my trips.  Since travel is my business, I need to be prepared, even for the unforeseen and even common travel mishap. On the other hand, my wife is one of many millions of Americans who has limited time to travel. The average American only gets 16 vacation days per year (CBS News), the shortest in the Western World.  Why not be protected and have peace of mind when you are in paradise?

Just an average morning in Maui.

One of my favorite activities in Maui is driving the road to Hana. It’s an epic road trip that can last 3 to 10 hours depending on how much you stop and explore along the way. If you are on the Road to Hana during a busy time or high season, the traffic can really slow you down. With that said, the Road to Hana is something not to be missed as you will discover so many great beaches, waterfalls and vistas that cannot be seen any other way. The key is to stop along the way and take your time. As we made our second stop ready to trek through a bamboo forest to waterfalls, we dutifully sprayed ourselves with insect repellant.

As my wife was spraying herself, a huge gust of Maui wind blew and she pretty much sprayed herself directly in the eye.  Trust me, as it says on the bottle, you do not want to get 100% DEET insect repellant directly in your eye. We immediately took out her contact out and began to flush her eye out. After the flushing and rinsing, it no longer stung but her eye was noticeably red. Luckily, it seemed her contact had protected her eye from major damage.

I was pretty concerned, so I looked into our options. If her eye continued to hurt, and if the redness did not fade, we would have to see a doctor and possibly cut our trip short. While travel insurance is very different than medical insurance, the trip interruption benefit included in my coverage gave me ultimate peace of mind. If we had to cut our Maui trip short, I knew I was covered with Allianz Travel Insurance. In the end, her eye was fine, we dodged a medical emergency, and we enjoyed the rest of our trip. Peace of mind with Allianz, even for a casual trip to Maui, is absolutely worth it.
